David found http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/asneeded.xml, and I
recompiled Postfix using those (GNU ld specific) options
"-Wl,--as-needed" on my Linux box:
make tidy

After that, cleanup and pipe (to name but a few) were linked
differently:
