    He's right.

    When I was on a cable modem, I had to relay through my ISP's relay server.

    If I sent mail to:

    It sent 3 messages to the relay server.

    The mistake he's probably making is that, with a direct connection to the
    end recipients' server, is that, normally, his server would make a single
    connection to that end server, and send all three recipients at the same
    time.

    I'd imagine that the same thing happens, while going through the relay
    server, though it's still sending multiple recipients, and, therefore,
    messages, it's probably only making one connection to the relay server for
    each set of recipients.

    So that for all @yahoo.com addresses, it's making a single connection.
    For all hotmail.com addresses, a second connection, etc.

    At least, that's been my experience.
