Sure, OK, fine. But since 99.999% of all e-mail users these days don't
have filesystem access to their mailboxes anyway, even if they do know
how to use any of the filesystem level unix tools or even any kind of
MUA that can access Maildirs directly, they won't be able to in the
first place. Your argument is only meaningful for a few of us geeks,
and we should all be very well capable of dealing with the likes of
Cyrus IMAP.

My point was that since for the most part only admins ever go bopping
around directly in mailbox filesystems, forcing them to jump through
some extra hoops to make sure they do things correctly is a "Very Good
Thing".
Maildir might be OK, or even great, for those geeks with their own local
filesystem access, but as others have already said quite well, Cyrus
IMAP is far more suitable for "enterprise class" mail systems, such as
those most any ISP might operate.
