When its convenient, is Wietse's polite way of saying as soon as bloody
possible, but not sooner. This means that processes don't get killed,
but exit when done with work already in progress. The only possible issue
is with smtpd(8) processing multiple messages from a client on the same
connection. The connection is not aborted until the client disconnects,
and old settings apply. This is rarely an issue (certainly if you are
willing to accept 'reload' for main.cf, the master.cf settings are not
as a whole substantially more urgent).
