Here are some commands, that setup sasl2 config for smtpd and it works
for me (postfix+sasl2+(now ldap but tested on shadow too)). I don't know
if these links are required - I found it somewhere.

I have a cyrus-sasl-2.1.19 installed in /usr/local/sasl2.

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/sasl2 .......
.......

cd /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/local/sasl2/lib/* .
cd /usr/lib/sasl2
echo 'pwcheck_method: saslauthd' > smtpd.conf
echo 'mech_list:plain login' >> smtpd.conf
/usr/local/sasl2/sbin/saslauthd -a shadow
