A healthy society needs people like Dan Bernstein who are productive,
creative, hold strong opinions and fight for what they believe
is right. His suit against the Federal government's cryptography
regulations was I think a significant factor in the final relaxation
of export controls, it takes guts to fight that sort of fight. If the
price of a polite society is that we lose principled voices like Dan's,
I'll take the impolite society in a blink of an eye.

I have a lot of respect for Dan's "I am right and you are all wrong"
attitude, because he's earned it, usually he is right or least makes
points well worth considering. In an ideal world things would be done more
along the ways he suggests (in the real world standards are compromises,
and sometimes an inferior standard is the right answer), and by golly
we need people like that.

I think we do a disservice to this list, when we "diss" Dan or Qmail.
While Postfix makes deliberate and reasoned departures from Qmail, and
while the tone on this list is reputedly more civil, we should keep in
mind that Qmail is a fine piece of software that has stood the test of
time reasonably well. When speak poorly of Dan, we invite others to
speak poorly of us. Let's all get back to the business of understanding
and improving Postfix, that alone takes up enough bandwidth.
