I had avoided jumping into this fray until now.
1.) I'm not Wietse's "defender", nor am I "dating him".
2.) The purpose of the list is to improve the usability of the program.
3.) If you have such great experience in using open-source software, then
you should already know that common list etiquette is to FIRST READ ALL THE
DOCUMENTATION. Did you try a Google search?
4.) "Go read this & that" is because the documentation about the feature is
quite clear, and sometimes missed.
5.) Wietse doesn't have an "elitist" attitude! Sometimes he is a little
snippy. I've posted a few stupid questions to the list myself. Wietse is
quite busy -- not only is he continuing to develop Postfix, but he has other
projects on the burner, too (he does have a "real job" for IBM). Cut the
man some slack -- he could just say "Fuck the list and fuck you, too!", and
have NO documentation at all (which seems to be the model for many other
open-source programs).
If you are unable to read the documentation, then you should get software
with a service & support contract and call for help. My company provides
this sort of support for Postfix installations (among other things). If
you'd like, I'm sure we could come to terms for a support contract.
6.) This list has been VERY helpful to me! I'm an IT professional -- a
freelancer -- so I get paid for doing installations, etcetera, and when
things don't work, I don't get paid. I often feel a bit guilty that other
people are taking time from their day to help me. When I can, I do the same
for others. You're attacking some quite generous people -- and you owe the
list an apology.
7.) I'm a FreeBSD committer. I can tell you that your attitude would have
you off any of the FreeBSD lists in a hurry. I'm surprised Wietse hasn't
dropped you from this list yet ... but I'd guess if you keep it up, it will
happen soon enough.
That's all I have to say for the moment.
