Duh! Because I noted only later that you use Debian :(
Debian puts smtpd.conf to /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf. Try that...
BTW: SASL is complicated enough. Moving smtpd.conf away from the
standard locaction didn't make this easier. I don't like this
'feature'...
