Depends on your definition of "reasonably economical".
NetAPPs are a good choice for NFS storage, they scale well, and have a
good set of features to make life easier regarding administration,
backup and restore.
However, the NetAPPs are not the only storage solution available for a
busy mail server farm, and you should look at more than one vendor.

The main customer mail platform at work has about 3.5 TB storage
mounted from 2 NetAPP heads, with 300K-400K POP logins per hour from
15 POP servers, and about 20K IMAP logins per hour from 4 IMAP
servers.
