It is a nightmare for me - I run Solaris 9 behind a PPPoE DSL with the
MTU at 1492 between me and the DSLAM.
Near as I can say ever since I enable IPv6 for Apache 2.x testing I have
had issues with the SMTP system - which would seem totally unrelated.
Seems that IPv6 always sets DF=1 when routing betwen IPv6-IPv4... I set
IPv6 to not forward packets - effectively disabling this function - but
it has only helped a little.
I have tried many things - I have disabled IPv4 MTU Path discovery,
messed around with MTU sizes - nothing seems to work - some hosts simply
cannot send me e-mail. I have learned to live with it while I run
Solaris 9. What I find strange is that while I was running Debian 3
Ultrasparc this was never an issue. I suppose that Linux (Debian) has
to be better at most things - except that I need to run Solaris.
Good luck with your MTU Path Discovery.
