I can confirm this with my Postfix version. I have more or less the same
kind of setup and also use smtpd_sender_login_maps for LDAP.
The only thing I can add is, that only one BIND is done for each LDAP
conn (one conn can service several recipients for each HELO) and there
are no UNBINDs until the client MTA disconnects and the conn is closed.
It's not taking up many resources; moreover I'm using ldapi through a
Unix domain socket for all Postfix LDAP stuff, which cuts down overhead
in itself.
It is strange, though.
