A couple hours ago I noticed my postfix server acting strange, I started
getting the following messages in my logs:
postfix/master[pid]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid yyy
killed by signal 11
postfix/master[pid]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup
-- throttling
configuration:
RedHat 9
postfix-1.1.11-11
This machine and this server have been happily running without incident since
mid-January. After trying everything I could think of, I asked rpm to verify
this package. It told me that the MD5 signature of /usr/libexec.postfix/smptd
was incorrect. I found another such executable from a second RedHat machine
that was working fine, copied it over, and my first machine started working
properly again.
"rpm" verify gives no issues with the MD5 signature of this copied file (just
a problem with the mtime date stamp). "diff" reports that the two smtpd files
(the non-working and the copied one) are different. Oddly enough, the two
smtpd files are the same length. Also, outgoing email from this server
appears to be unaffected, the problem was with making incoming smtp
connections to this machine.
Any ideas/comments?
