I forgot about the canonicalization delay in Postfix 1.x, that is a very
likely explanation for the problem. With a local cache, the data will
already be in the cache because of the preceding MX lookup, but given a
remote DNS cache with a lossy network path to the cache, the above may be
plausible. The same issue can happen when the nexthop for a domain is
explicitly set in the transport table and is not equal to the destination
domain.
