waste of effort. spammers dont check the return value. we took down one of
our SMTP's for a couple months. removed it from DNS. when you brought up
another machine on the same IP several months later, it immediately was
inundated by connects from Spamhaus-listed IPs.

moral of the story: they don't even check if the IP is reachable!! they
just attempt to connect and connect and connect...
