saslauthd needs to create a socket. By default the dir for the socket is
in /var/state/saslauthd:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 24 01:12 saslauthd

Leave the chroot turned of for now.

For more, detailed help post your "postconf -n" and your smtpd.conf.
