DNS Clarification

When I run postfix I am getting on error of interest that baffles me.

I have a user who is configured with a XXX.2 as a firewall and XXX.3
as a MX record for his email server. Last night, the error was that
there was no reverse lookup available for his address.

There was no Answer for "dig -x XXX.2" which was his reported email
address. His real mail server (and smtp box) is XXX.3

This morning I can get a reverse lookup, but XXX.2 doesn't have an
MX record. It isn't supposed to is it? It's failing on an SMTP
connection.

I think he's actually using this box as his smtp server for
delivering email from his client PC. But I suspect that his client
PC is roaming the internet. That might be the problem here, or
another one for later on.

But does postfix do a MX based lookup, or just any old lookup?
