I was going to do something similar... (local + virtual transport)

So - postfix does it's job correctly? If mails get delivered to the
correct mailbox postfix's job is done.

How does he connect to the mailserver to _get_ his mail? POP? IMAP? I
wonder what that has to do with postfix ;).
