Actually the I/O subsystem needs to be fast. I am handling 200K per day at
10-15% CPU load and 5-10% I/O bandwidth with expensive filters and a very
high end fibre attached RAID array. If the filter only massages the
envelope the CPU cost will be low for any reasonable implementation.
