I'm working on a patch - it adds a new variable to INSTALL.sh set only
when building the RPM and the chown/chgrp calls are made conditional
depending on it.

I guess you don't know much about RPM building (no offense, I'm not
a guru myself) - you can easily move the build directory tree
to wherever you like - see the rpm-list archives if you want details.
Or mail me privately. So, non-root builds are quite possible and
easy to set-up (with the exception of mknod - but there are workarounds).
