that's very sad.
the build should NEVER be done as root
the _install_ on the other hand....

Indeed -- but there are alternatives, such as the *BSD pkgsrc/ports
stuff. In NetBSD you can do an entire "make package" and it'll ask for
the root password only when it needs the privileges.....
