You will find that many rpms insist on being built under root, KDE
being a prime example.
While Simon may be able to justify it I have to say that I regard
compiling things under root as bad practice from a security point of
view (along with running X as root - which you have to do to run KDE
control centre, linuxconf or many other things - unless you are a
technically quite savvy user that is).
We are being bitten again by the conflicts between good security
practices and convenience.
