Bill,
I know this problem very well because we have had it with our systems.
I had used a custom patch to saslauthd basically, but have a look at this
dicussion thead (including the patch if you care):

Especially I was given a reference to
http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin22/sasl.html
I never followed this up because it just worked with my patch (for years
now) but I might want to take the time and find out how we can migrate
back to an "out of the box" system with no site specific code.
