I have to know more to be sure (configuration file, what mechanism you are
using), but you should be able to authenticate with PLAIN or LOGIN fine
with saslauthd. You will not be able to authenticate with CRAM, DIGEST,
etc, without a sasldb (or other auxprop plugin).

Only if you want to use CRAM, DIGEST, SRP, OTP, etc...
