I think the problem is that you authenticate against PAM instead of
sasldb. Change the sasl_pwcheck_method to sasldb and try again.

out of my /etc/imapd.conf
...
admins: cyrus
allowanonymouslogin: no
sasl_passwd_check: sasldb
...

Check your user/passwd database with:

sasldblistusers
You should get lines like:

user: XXXXXX realm: pinguin mech: PLAIN
user: XXXXXX realm: pinguin mech: CRAM-MD5
user: YYYY realm: pinguin mech: PLAIN
user: YYYY realm: pinguin mech: CRAM-MD5
