after looking around at the actual filesystem I noticed that my
"cyrus.cache" file was 24M. Much too large, I'm sure...

I ran reconstruct and now the cyrus.cache file is 343k... Much better...

This explains why the expunge worked on all sub-folders but not my inbox.

Thanks for the great idea about large files possibly causing the problem..
