Well, I studied the problem long ago, and found out a good program to
convert PS to HTML (or plain text). This is prescript, available at
http://www.nzdl.org/html/prescript.html
The problem with it is slowest converter I have ever seen. Also, I do not
know if it is good for PDF files or not. Probably you can try pdf2ps and
prescript in a pipe. Also, look at freshmeat.net and/or google.com for
other converters - probably you will find something good.
Other converters that I know of are:
pdftotext - is from xpdf package. http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/
ps2ascii - from GhostScript package, works both for PS and PDF files.
